About Succasunna NJ
Succasunna, located within Roxbury Township in Morris County, New Jersey, is a historic community with roots dating back to colonial times. Its name comes from the Lenni Lenape language, meaning “land of black stones,” a reference to the area's iron-rich soil that played a key role in early industry. Over time, Succasunna evolved from a rural settlement into a suburban hub that still retains its small-town charm. The area features popular recreational spots like Horseshoe Lake and the Black River Wildlife Management Area, offering outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and boating. Succasunna is also known for producing several notable individuals, including Mahlon Dickerson, a former Governor of New Jersey and U.S. Secretary of the Navy, and his brother Philemon Dickerson, who also served as Governor and a federal judge. Other distinguished natives include comic-book publisher Harry “A” Chesler and professional soccer players Doug Miller and Paige Monaghan.
